Unpublished and intriguing
Lot 1635
Uncertain, 4th-6th centuries. Weight (Bronze, 25 mm, 25.15 g), a square commercial weight. H-AM-O/T/Δ (or A?) Female head with long hair to right; above, triskeles; all incuse. Rev. Faintly engraved monogram flanked by I-Λ (?); all within octagram formed out of a double square. Unpublished, an intriguing piece. Extremely fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The meaning of the inscription on this unusual piece is unclear. It might consist of abbreviations; in any case, the division into H, AM, and O/T/Δ (or A?) is striking. Unfortunately, the monogram on the reverse side is only faintly engraved, preventing a clear reading. Based on the late Roman-style portrait and the square shape, we date the piece to the 4th-6th century, although the dating remains uncertain.
